Christine Helliar Interest Rate Risk Management

Financial risk management is currently subject to much debate, especially the accounting for derivative products, and a number of commentators are objecting to the introduction of International Accounting Standard IAS 39 for Derivatives that will be in force by January 2005 for all EU companies. The topic of hedge accounting and the treatment of fair values may have a significant impact on many companies reported profits, and the volatility of earnings is likely to increase. Uniquely this monograph focuses on interest rate risk management. Most studies of corporate risk management have typically dwelt on the topic of management of exchange rate risk, with interest rate risk management being neglected. The book's findings examine the views of UK corporate treasurers who are usually involved in the risk management strategies of their organisation and who have responsibility for implementing those strategies in practice.

Francesco Orsini Atomic Force Microscopy applied to biological systems

This book describes the application of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) to the study of the Xenopus laevis oocyte plasma membrane. In particular, different sample preparation protocols developed and optimized to perform AFM investigation of both external and intracellular sides of the oocyte native plasma membrane are presented and discussed in details. AFM imaging allowed visualization and dimensional characterization of protein complexes observed on both sides of the oocyte plasma membrane. In addition, a new methodological approach based on the purification of oocyte plasma membrane by ultracentrifugation on a discontinuous sucrose gradient allowed to image oocyte membrane in a physiological-like environment as well as to identify a membrane protein, the human aquaporin 4, expressed in the oocytes thus opening interesting perspectives in the AFM investigation of heterologous proteins of relevant biomedical interest. Taken together, these results confirm the potential of AFM as a...

Timothy Ellah Nigeria's Security Interest in the Gulf of Guinea:

THE Gulf of Guinea is an enclave of growing economic, social, political and geostrategic importance. It is also an enclave of overwhelming poverty, disease, chronic instability and prone to terrorist incursion. The establishment of a new combatant force (AFRICOM) for the region (GULF OF GUINEA) and Africa in general by the United States of America marks an important milestone in the evolution of relations between the U.S and the government of the Gulf region. Through AFRICOM, the United States Department of Defense will consolidate the efforts of other existing Commands and headquarters as it seek a more stable environment for political and economic growth in the Gulf of Guinea. In line with such goals, AFRICOM would be pioneering a bold method of military engagement focused on war prevention, interagency cooperation, and development rather than on traditional war fighting. It is in such view that this study is carried out to assess Nigeria’s security interest in the Gulf of Guinea...

Qeis Kamran Complexity the Sixth Competitive Force that Shapes Strategy

The current work at the hand of the reader is written to answer one of the fundamental questions of the contemporary quests in organizational strategy theory and its practice. The work is written because of the author’s great interest as a strategy consultant in applying scientific and practical methods to help his client organizations in questions of strategy but moreover it is actually written from the author’s frustration as a manager, entrepreneur and consultant with the mainstream observation of the notion of strategy and what is generally observed as strategy. The work is not only for students of business administration but of strategy for organizations of all kinds and sizes. Strategy is more than a bad exercise in goal- setting that is mostly not achieved; it’s actually a construction of diagnosis, a viable plan and a ubiquitous action applied simultaneously on a focused goal. The few pages ahead are journeys in thought, observation, reflection and theories constructed for...

Michael Reinhard The Force of Ideas

This book examines the role of ideas in policy change. While most changes in public policy are incremental, on occasion there is a major shift. Most scholarship in political science attributes such shifts to what might be called material forces, such as the actions of interest groups changes in the partisan control of government. But I argue that radical change occurs only when the definition of the problem itself has first been altered. I apply this theory the passage of welfare reform in 1996 - the first time major means-tested entitlement program was ended in the US. I show that such a shift in ideas and problem definition had taken place across the political spectrum well before the shift in the partisan control of Congress to which most political scientists have pointed to explain this shift in policy. Using tools from computational linguistics, I show that over a 20 year period the discussion of the causes of poverty became focused on the moral hazards created by welfare and the...

The impact of interest rate on selected macroeconomic variables

Interest rates play important role in controlling major macroeconomic variables. The primary role of interest rate is to help in the mobilization of financial resources and to ensure efficient utilization of resources for the promotion of economic growth and development (CBN 1970). This study was embarked upon with a view to determining the impact of interest rate on selected macroeconomic variables in Nigeria. Data were sourced from CBN, Securities And Exchange Commission, Nigeria and NDIC. Data covered a period of 41 years (1970 to 2010) and analyzed electronically with SPSS 23.0 using the multiple regression model.

Dorothy Nampewo Determinants of Interest Rate Spreads in Uganda''s banking Sector

High Interest Rate Spreads, negatively affect the level of economic growth of a Country and the effeciency of the financial institutions. This is evidenced in the inverse relationship of the spreads and the level of GDP and the ratio of M2/GDP as proxies for economic growth and level of financial intermediation in this study respectively. Further, the direct relationship of the bank rate, treasury bill rates and the ratio of non performing loans to private sector credit in this study indicates the likelines of crowding out of private sector investment which also negatively affect the level of economic development of a Country. This is not "good news" for a developing country like Uganda. Measures should therefore, be taken to reduce the Interest Rate Spreads in Uganda.

Kheswar Chandan Jankee Interest rate policies and economic management in emerging economies

This book provides additional empirical evidence on interest rate policies and economic management for a small island economy like Mauritius. After a selective review of the theoretical and empirical literature on interest rate policies in emerging economies it analyses the process of interest rate liberalization in Mauritius and its economic impact. In the preliminary analysis of financial developments, it raises a number of pertinent issues and formulates some hypotheses for empirical investigation. The book comprises eleven chapters: the first three chapters introduce issues relating to interest rate liberalization in developing countries and discuss the process of liberalization in Mauritius; the remaining six chapters provide an in-depth study and verification of some hypotheses on three main issues, namely, interest rate determination, economic effects of interest rate liberalization and impact of political influences on interest rate policies; while the last chapter concludes...

Lawrence Mhandara and Eve. Z. Nyemba The Middle East Question: Exploring the Interest-Conflict Nexus

For a long period, the Middle East has been an arena of intense inter-state rivalry and conflict as evidenced by the rampant instability and insecurity within the geopolitical landscape. The conditions in the region have been exacerbated by the end of the Cold War that left the US as the sole dominating force both economically and politically. This book identifies the US as the predominant power in the politics of the region and explores how its interest shapes policy towards selected key states in the region. Fundamentally, the nexus between national interest and conflict is examined in the context of the region’s political dynamics. The central argument is that the interests of the US in the region are wide-ranging but predominantly strategic which breeds unrest and conflict. Paradoxically, the role of the UN in the region has been subdued despite the existence of a threat to international peace and security. Conceptually building the argument from a realist perspective, the...
